Free Speed – Virtually every runner wants to run faster. In this world fast feels good. Most runners I see don’t look like running feels good. They look like running is something they feel they have to do. Finding the free speed in your running can be liberating. It may actually make you faster. It will make running feel like a better experience.
A Case Study
What do you do when, you break your ankle in a freak accident, have a desire to compete at the highest level of triathlon? Running is not your strength and you just set yourself back. Well that’s where I come in. The work we did allowed this athlete to run injury free. She put everything into doing the things I taught her. The results speak for themselves. She’s a regular in Kona at the Ironman World Championships and wins virtually every race she enters. The super runners used to catch her on the run. They rarely do now. I didn’t make her faster. I made her feel a bit like a runner. She made herself a better athlete.
You don’t have to be at the top of your class to benefit. In fact more often then not my clients are middle of the pack mom’s and dads who simply want to feel better when they are running.
What Is Free Speed
Free Speed comes down to three things, Your Form, You Range of Motion and Your Shoes.
- If you ran in high school generally we can throw out running form. Either directly or indirectly your running coach taught you good form in practice. You may need a reminder of what that coach was doing but in general that good form comes back. Most runners today never ran in high school and have never learned those tools to work on running form. Think about every other sport in the universe- Swimming, Football, Soccer, Basketball and more. All of those have drills that lead to better performance. Running is no different.
- Range of Motion- This is where every runner over 30 has issues. Most of you sit down most of your day, behind a desk or behind the wheel. You’ve probably been taught to stretch and rarely do it. That’s just part of range of motion. The common term today is Mobility. It involves stretching, strengthening and a great deal more.
- Your Running Shoes – In the 90’s when I first started selling running shoes, runners were confused with the choices. Go to any running store in your community or on the internet and the 90’s look rather simple. There are more shoes being added every single day. In most of the market research I do there are 26 brands in every event. Free Speed starts with your shoes.
The thing I’ve most learned in running is that it’s individual. What works for one runner may work for many but it absolutely won’t work for every runner. Whether it’s shoes, drills or mobility. It’s in this where my experience in and around running my whole life comes in. I will help you find that Free Run Speed.
